The influence of comics and cartoons in fashion design

Sabrina Foschini will be joined by Loris Cantarelli and Luca Panzieri, experts in the field, to discuss and deepen the relationship between fashion, cartoons, comics and cosplay.

The mutual influences, inspirations and connections that exist between fashion designers and animated or drawn characters will be explored.

We will analyze the works of well-known designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Moschino, who have dialogued with the world of animation, and comics, inspiring stories and incorporating visual suggestions into their garments.

The event will culminate with a small parade of original clothes made by the students of Caterina Gentile’s Fashion Design course at LABA. These dresses will be dedicated to some characters of the animation or comic strip and will be presented by the corresponding cosplayers.

The show will represent a delicate balance between inspiration and mimesis, combining two different visions of clothes and costumes. On the one hand, designers will try to combine fantastic imagery with haute couture, bringing animation inspiration into new creative horizons. On the other hand, cosplayers will strive to faithfully reproduce the appearance, details and charisma of the characters, trying to embody them in an authentic way.

The evening will offer a unique perspective on the encounter between fashion, animation and comics, exploring the interaction between visual art and costume art. An opportunity to appreciate the creativity and ingenuity of designers, animators and cosplayers, while bringing to light the multiple influences that shape the world of contemporary fashion.
