Oscar-winning Iranian director Shirin Sohani co-helmed In the Shadow of the Cypress; concept artist and mentor pushing Barfak’s indie animation worldwide.
Descrizione: Shirin Sohani is an Iranian animation director, screenwriter, concept and background artist, and production manager. Armed with an M.A. in Animation Directing from Tehran University of Art, she has been in the game since 2012 and refuses to treat budget limits as an excuse. Her graduation short The Fan (2014) scored both domestic and international laurels, marking her as a storyteller worth tracking. In 2023 she co-directed In the Shadow of the Cypress with Hossein Molayemi—an unflinching look at trauma, resilience and family, told through dense symbolism and pared-down design. Despite sanctions and shoestring resources, the film swept festival circuit prizes, including the 2025 Oscar for Best Animated Short, Cartoon Club, Golden Kuker Sofia and top awards at Tribeca, Sulmona and Drama; it also screened at Annecy and scored an Annie nomination. A key player at Barfak Animation Studio, Sohani now splits her time between production, concept work and mentoring the next wave of Iranian animators.
