Hossein Molayemi
Descrizione:
Hossein Molayemi (Shiraz, 1982) is an Iranian animation director, character designer, storyboard artist, animator and university lecturer. With an M.A. in Animation Directing from Tehran University of Art, he has been working professionally since 2004 and co-founded the indie studio Barfak to keep creative control firmly in local hands.
His debut short, Run Rostam Run (2017), re-tools the Persian hero Rostam for modern viewers; it toured Annecy, Warsaw and other festivals and picked up a clutch of national and international prizes.
The follow-up, In the Shadow of the Cypress (2023, co-directed with Shirin Sohani), bowed in Venice’s Orizzonti line-up, claimed the 2024 Cartoon Club Award and went on to win the 2025 Oscar for Best Animated Short—making it the first Iranian film ever to take that statuette.
Molayemi teaches at Tehran University of Art, chairs Barfak and helped found the university’s Scientific Association of Animation. The brief is simple: keep Iranian stories in circulation, raise the craft level and prove you don’t need a giant budget to hit the world stage.
