The boy and the heron
by Hayao Miyazaki
Ten years after announcing his retirement, legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki is back on screens with a new masterpiece, The Boy and the Heron.
Set in Japan during World War II, the film tells the story of a teenager named Mahito who, after losing his mother, embarks on a fantastical journey led by a strange heron to try to see his mother again.
Inspired in part by Miyazaki’s childhood memories and in part by Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel And How Will You Live?, the film tackles profound themes such as the tragedy of war and mourning, but also the wonder of childhood.
With stunningly visually beautiful images, The Boy and the Heron explores universal feelings such as love, the meaning of life, friendship, and self-discovery. Suspended between reality and fantasy, the film thrills with its spiritual depth, a distinctive feature of the work of this extraordinary master of animation. The film knows how to involve and fascinate for its emotional depth and does not deny the profound spiritual vision of the world that characterizes the poetics of this extraordinary author of animated cinema.
